Attendance & Truancy

Milford Schools is updating attendance practices to comply with Ohio House Bill 96, which includes new requirements for how schools track absences, notify families, and support students who miss school.

Reporting an Absence

Parents and guardians should notify the school within one hour of the start of the school day when a student will be absent.

Absences may be reported by online form, email, or phone call. Families can report an absence by clicking the link here.

Parent-Excused Absences

Under the district’s updated attendance procedures, parents may excuse up to eight absences per school year without a doctor’s note.

After eight parent-excused absences, medical documentation is required for future absences to be excused.

Valid doctor’s notes help protect a student’s attendance record. Medical documentation does not count against the eight parent-excused absence limit.

Please see our health services webpage for more wellness information, including information regarding when to keep your child at home.

Attendance Thresholds

Under Ohio law, schools are required to monitor absences in hours.

A student may be considered chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of the school year, regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused.

A student may be considered habitually truant if they have unexcused absences totaling:

  • 30 or more consecutive hours

  • 42 or more hours in one school month

  • 72 or more hours in one school year

When students reach attendance concern levels, Milford Schools will communicate with families and work to provide support.
