Construction of a new Milford middle school is one step closer after an architectural firm was selected by the Ohio Facilities Commission and district officials.

The Cincinnati-based firm SHP Leading Design was selected to lead the project following interviews that occurred on Monday, March 21.

SHP was one of three firms who were interviewed in front of a panel of district and OFCC officials. The other two were Cincinnati firms Emersion Design and VSWC. Each gave 30 minute presentations and were permitted an additional 15 minutes to answer questions. Two OFCC officials and two Milford officials ranked their preferences based on a scoring rubric and SHP came out on top.

“All three firms are highly qualified, and it was great to hear their presentations,” said Jeff Johnson, Milford’s director of business and operations. “All three have extensive school project experience and a track record of completing projects that were on time and on budget.”

Both SHP and VSWC have designed other schools for Milford. SHP designed Boyd E. Smith and Charles L. Seipelt Elementary Schools and VSWC designed McCormick, Meadowview, Mulberry and Pattison Elementary Schools.

Funding for the project is derived from a 2.47 mill bond issue approved by voters in November 2021, which will generate $55.9 million over 30 years. Milford will receive $11.5 million in co-funding from the OFCC to pay for a portion of the project.

The next step is to conduct similar interviews and select one of three construction management firms that submitted statements of qualifications to the OFCC, Conger Construction Group, Turner Construction and HGC Construction. Those interviews will be held on Monday, April 18.
