More information about this morning's 2-hour delay

Posted on: November 21, 2019

A message from Nancy House, Superintendent:

Milford Families,

I want to thank you for your patience and understanding this morning. The Miami Township Police Department alerted us at 6:00 a.m. that there was a suspect loose in the area of Boyd E. Smith Elementary School. We decided to delay all Milford District buildings two hours to ensure everyone’s safety.

The timing of this could not have been worse as there were already some students at bus stops and some already on their way to school when we were notified by the police department. We immediately sent out a notification to delay school when the decision was made. Students who had already arrived at school this morning were kept at school and they were safe. Students on their way to school on buses arrived at school safely.

Typically, if we delay or close due to inclement weather, we know much earlier and have more time to notify you. This morning’s situation was unique as it was unfolding and multiple notifications were sent as the district was made more aware of the circumstances. Our goal was to make sure everyone was kept up to date with what was happening.

Families were notified in a variety of ways - the school notification system sent recorded voice messages and emails, notices were placed on the district’s Facebook page and website, and we alerted local TV and radio stations. We are aware that some families did not receive all of the notifications, and we apologize for any worry that may have caused. We urge parents to double-check their contact information in FinalForms: https://milford-oh.finalforms.com/. If your information is correct in FinalForms, please contact your child’s school to inquire further.

Parents do have the option to opt-out of receiving phone calls from the system. At any time while listening to a phone message from our our notification system, recipients can press “5” on their phone to initiate the opt-out process. However, we prefer that parents notify their child’s school before opting out. We wouldn’t want parents to accidentally opt-out and then miss important future communications.

Thank you again for your patience as we worked through this morning’s situation.
