Milford’s McCormick Elementary is one of only six schools in the entire State of Ohio to earn the distinction as “Hall of Fame” school. In October 2008, school representatives and parents traveled to Columbus to receive the honor from the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators (OAESA).
The school was nominated in 2007 and completed a lengthy application. OAESA selected McCormick as a finalist based on the merits of its application. The selection process consisted of a 12-page document on school environment, programming, and achievement. High performing applicants are granted a site visit by a team of evaluators. Their evaluation combines with the application score to determine which schools are deemed worthy of the Hall of Fame honor. Six schools in Ohio earned the honor for 2008.
The program for the October event included the following quote written by the team of evaluators:
"I believe that McCormick Elementary School should be selected as a Hall of Fame School. When visiting McCormick Elementary I immediately felt the dedication and the commitment to student learning by teachers and staff members. The school climate radiated a sense of caring for the learning of each individual student and demonstrated a sense of mutual support for each other as educators. School programs strongly support student responsibility for behaviors and learning and foster a sense of belonging for students. The staff works together to identify student needs, implementing intervention strategies and to accept the responsibility for improving student learning."
Congratulations to the McCormick staff, students, parents, and volunteers for this wonderful honor!
McCormick is one of four new elementary schools in Milford made possible by the support of a bond issue in 2001. McCormick Elementary opened its doors for the 2003-2004 school year. It houses grades K-6 and features larger kindergarten classrooms to provide sufficient space for all of the activities during the course of the kindergarten year.
The design of all four new elementary schools incorporated an academic wing and a community center. They are separate to accomodate community use of the building during after hours. The school features a library, computer lab, project room, art and music rooms and a cafeteria/auditorium that is called the auditeria. This rooms also opens up to the full-sized gym to allow for an even larger space for a big audience. Community youth programs take full advantage of the full gyms with wood floors to promote the excellent opportunities for student athletics.
The academic wings are separated by grade level. The kindergarten rooms are centralized. Pods of classrooms for grades one through three are included on one wing and feature cubbies for student use. Students in grades four through six have access to lockers.
In addition to the new building and all of its features, students benefit from the experiences and skills of a talented staff. The staff offers a nurturing and caring environment that encourages students to succeed. McCormick also features a dedicated parent support group which helps to financially support numerous academic programs and teacher activities.
